Species overview

Bottlenose dolphins are toothed marine mammals. Jennifer confirmed that this historical managed encounter involved a bottlenose dolphin.

Destinations where they may be seen

Dolphins occur in marine and some river habitats worldwide. This record concerns only Jennifer's managed excursion in Cozumel, Mexico.

Best viewing considerations

For wild dolphins, choose lawful distance-based observation without pursuit, feeding, or swimming. For captive programs, independently investigate animal origin, enclosure, veterinary care, handling, accreditation, and welfare evidence.

Where Jennifer encountered them

Jennifer participated in a supervised dolphin encounter at Dolphinaris Cozumel in Cozumel, Mexico.

Ethical viewing distance

This was a staff-directed contact encounter, not a model for approaching wild dolphins. Travelers should never transfer captive-contact practices to wildlife viewing.

Operator or setting

Dolphinaris Cozumel, a managed dolphin-contact facility in Cozumel, Mexico. A 2018 PROFEPA inspection reported that the facility complied with the applicable standards at that time; this historical finding is not proof of current conditions or a blanket animal-welfare endorsement.

Seasonal considerations

Dolphinaris currently lists Cozumel hours as 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, and its FAQ asks guests to reserve at least two hours ahead while noting that advance-purchase promotions can vary by season. Program schedules, capacity, weather, water conditions, and legal requirements can change, so confirm the exact experience and current operating status before booking—especially because Mexico amended its marine-mammal law in July 2025.

Photography guidance

For wild dolphins, use zoom and follow the controlling distance rules without chasing, feeding, touching, or entering the water to create a photograph. During a supervised managed encounter, follow every staff direction and remove jewelry, cameras, loose accessories, and anything else that could come off in the water before entering.

Safety and biosecurity guidance

Close contact with a large marine mammal carries injury and health risks. Follow the briefing and trainer at every moment. Confirm current restrictions before arrival; Dolphinaris says cameras and other personal objects cannot enter the dolphin area, and program instructions may restrict jewelry, loose items, sunscreen, or other skin products.

What is never guaranteed

BVG does not promise animal participation, contact, behavior, photographs, program availability, or acceptable welfare standards.

Conservation context

Dolphinaris describes veterinary care, enrichment, education, and environmental work on its own website. Those are operator claims. BVG did not find current independent evidence establishing that a Cozumel booking directly funds a specific conservation program, so no such benefit is claimed here.

Captive-versus-wild disclosure

Captive-versus-wild disclosure: managed dolphin-contact excursion in a constructed pool; not a wild encounter.
