A Friendship Trip to Oahu Filled with Adventure
An Air Force retirement celebration, solo island exploring, and open-water sharks helped set the course for an even bigger journey.

I flew United to Oahu for one reason that mattered more than any attraction: my friend and fellow Public Affairs comrade April was retiring from the Air Force. I stayed with her family, rented a car from Budget, and built my own exploring around the obligations and celebrations that came with her retirement.

When April needed to focus on family or ceremony plans, I was comfortable going out alone. GPS, a rental car, and my travel experience made the logistics manageable. The island gave me room to be both a witness in a friend’s milestone and an independent traveler.
The clearest expression of my adventurous side happened in the water: an open-water snorkel with lemon sharks through Hawaii Adventure Diving. The experience became the first activity I would name when someone asked what stood out.

Other days included active exploring around the island. I also considered adding another Hawaiian island, but the inter-island flight timing did not work with early-start activities. The choice was a useful reminder that a packed itinerary is not always a better one.

The best moment was not a single beach or overlook. It was booking a trip to Antarctica with April. One friend’s retirement trip became the starting line for a joint adventure, proof that travel memories are often connected long before we recognize the pattern.
For someone following this version of Oahu, comfort with independent driving and outdoor activities helps, but the most important recommendation is to leave room for the reason you came. The island was extraordinary; celebrating the accomplishments of a lifelong friend made it exceptional.
